On a warm summer night in Boston, a small but enthusiastic crowd was treated to, in this blogger’s opinion, some of the best live music one can see in this day and age. King Creosote & Jon Hopkins made their way across the pond for the first time for a short North American tour and we were lucky enough to catch them at Brighton Music Hall. Playing their excellent album, Diamond Mine, cover to cover, KC & JH translated the emotion and feeling of each of track in beautiful fashion. With JH on the field recordings and keys, he brings the X-factor to KC’s songs that have taken them over the top. Not that anything is really missing (KC was in fine voice) but the expert production and extra instruments give the little extra that makes Diamond Mine (I think) the best album of the year. DDR was lucky enough to talk to King Creosote after the show and he was very grateful for our kind words about Diamond Mine and was nice enough to take picture with us! (see below). In some respects, it is too bad that there was such a small crowd there, but I think KC has not totally caught on in the U.S. yet (duh, we are 6-months-to-a-year late on EVERYTHING that is good). No matter, we were lucky to see him in a very intimate venue and got to tell him that he is making great music. That is good enough for us.
Local band Slant of Light opened and we were pleasantly surprised by their set. A mix of alt country and some indie rock, they were the perfect opener for this show. Their set closer, “Coming Back Home,” from their forthcoming album in October was the best track. Check out their web site and Facebook page… we need to support local artists!
