Kathleen Edwards Played Royale Club Boston 4.26.12 (Pictures, Setlist, Videos)

The hockey-loving, whiskey-drinking, unpredictable, fiery, and amazingly talented Kathleen Edwards rocked Royale last night. She was in high spirits to start the show even though her beloved Ottawa Senators were defeated in Game 7 last night. She gave it to us Bruins fans too for losing the other night. As it always goes, it is about the music, and Edwards has some of the best songs in the business. Her excellent new album Voyageur was on display all night, opening with “Empty Threat” and running through most of Voyageur. Edwards recently had to cancel about three weeks of shows to rest her voice and this was only the second show back for her. You could tell on some of the higher notes that she was being cautious. We know this because she told us in her most creative way. Kathleen likes to swear. In fact, the word “fuck” was uttered at least 100 times last night referring to her voice, her not so flattering haircut (don’t go to “fucking Toronto” for a cut, she says), and her impending stage fright, which she says has just come on due to her vocal troubles. Either way, you couldn’t tell from the crowds reaction, because it was all die-hards to have loved her since 2003′s Failer. She even gave a shout out to her record company, Rounder Records. Rounder is based in Burlington, and she said she is always happy to see then when she comes to Boston. Well she said it in her own creative way (I believe she called them “fucking cockroaches”, but she loves them anyway!). She is engaging, talented, insecure, angry, happy and sad all at once. Makes for a very interesting night and a very interesting artist. We need more like this one.
