I don’t know what’s funnier: 1) the fact that I’ve typed “Pussy Riot” into Google so many times I am probably now on some ‘watch’ list, 2) the fact that the charges filed against these rockers for performing a “feminist church protests” makes this whole thing seems like a “Portlandia” (via Russia) skit, or 3) the use of the word ‘snigger’ in articles like the one from the AFP Newswire on in discussion of the msnbc that has unfolded so far around the band’s impending trial.
But what’s NOT funny about this whole thing is the charges against the band. Everyone is crying foul (pun intended) about Chick-fil-A’s ‘freedom of speech,’ but officials in Russia won’t allow a few radical females the right to express disdain for their country’s leader. Maybe they should put on chicken costumes when they go into the courtroom and protest the fact that their government may very well fear something much more powerful than a bunch of words and lyrics–women’s rights.
